Message: Hi Trond, Renato, all, your article was just in time, while I was about to do some ELF tests with an E-field antenna (whip + highimpedance amp) and a portable FFT analyzer HP3569a. Some spectra from this afternoon show a significant peak at 81.9 ... 82.0 Hz, others do not. Then the batteries went down (done in a quiet and cold place in the open). More to follow...

Message: Hello Alan The Alpha transmitters has been off air for some days as you have noticed. This happens at (ir)regular intervals, most of the transmission breaks are for routine maintance, but acording to the Alpha operator is the system also under constant upgrading. At this time of year, with low static is even the far east station near Khabarovsk possible to receive here at ALFLAB in Halden, Norway.

Subject: Great site
Message: Great site. I have been interested in VLF and below for some time but am just now building receivers. I was wondering if anyone was doing long baseline correllation studies. I think this should be possible using three widely spaced sites and simultaneously recording a very accurate time signal (such as WWVB divided by 6) along with the ULF/VLF signal. The recordings would then be correlated in a computer. With three sites, should be able to determine source of signals in three dimensions. Thanks again for a great site. I will be back, probably with lots of questions. By the way, tried to send you an email earlier and it was rejected.

Message: Russian time signal station RJH63 at Krasnodar by the Black Sea is also receivable with sound-card receivers. Even though the main transmission is at 25.00 and other frequencies outside the range of soundcards, there is also a short transmission on 20.50 kHz each day. Tune up and phase adjust at 11:30 UTC followed by unmodulated carrier at 11:42 UTC and finally FSK from 11:36 to end of transmission at 11:40 UTC. This also apply to the other station operated by RIRT in Russia, RJH66 RJH69 RJH77 RJH99 and RAB99, but here is the 20.50 kHz transmission from XX:41 UTC to XX:47 UTC acording to each separate stations transmission schedule. Have fun.

Subject: Geomagnetic Storm or Lightning whistlers?
Message: Around midnight July 16 (0600Z July 16) I heard many whispery whistlers, seemingly some of 3 and 4 "hops", during the geomagnetic storm. There was even a cascade of whistlers! See my web page for samples and graphs. But I have questions.

1. Are whistlers due solely to lightning? Or are they also caused by particle bombardment from the sun? If so, how do you tell the difference? What VLF activity takes place during a geomagnetic storm, if not whistlers?

2. Have any studies been conducted to determine if whistlers can only be heard from storms at the magnetic conjugate points? Can they also be caused by local storms?

3. Most of my whistler samples are preceded 2 seconds (approx.) by a sharp static discharge. Are the two connected? If the electromagnetic pulse travels at 186,000 miles/sec, then wouldn't that physically separate the two events by a considerable distance?

Thanks --Art

-------------------------------------
Update 1300 MDT 6 June 2000

Initial satellite and ground based observations show the 3 MAJOR flares
earlier today indeed produced massive coronal mass ejections (CME) that
will impact the earth from late 7 June to late 8 June (depending upon
the velocity of the shockwave, which will be determined from later
observations). The single M-class and two X-class flares, occuring within
a two hour period, came from region 9206, which is less than 30 degrees
from the center of the sun, or placing it well within the "window" where
the trajectory of the shockwave is earth-bound.

Already, several agencies are predicting SEVERE to EXTREMELY SEVERE
Geomagnetic storms from today's events. That will be a K index of 8 to 9
and an A-index >100. This will cause complete HF blackouts, spectacular
auroras into the lower latitudes and possible damage to orbitting
satellites.

I will post today's NOAA RSGA with commentary when it is released
later today for those interested in this upcoming "biggie."

72, Paul NA5N

12.075 equals the 4th segment of the new scheme; station X
14.858 equals the 4th segment of the new scheme; station KR (the "ghost")
12.102 equals the 5th segment of the new scheme; station X
11.929 equals the 6th segment of the new scheme; station KR
12.705 equals the 1st segment of the new scheme; station KR
11.292 equals the 2nd segment of the new scheme; station X

That means, you are receiving two of the three stations. Station KO (if it is still KO) seems to be out of your range.
The frequencies measured may not be quite correct. Which receiving equipment - apart from your loop - do you employ?
It would be of great help if you could turn your loop and take the bearings of the stations (true North is zero degrees, West is 90 and so forth). Especially the new station in your neighborhood is of interest. An azimuthal map centered at your qth is helpful. If you need one, let me know.

Some infos on classic ALPHA:
Hyperbolic navaid, Russian equivalent to western OMEGA (closed down), three stations (see below), master station NO, 50 - 100 kW ERP, cycle length 3.6 s compared to 10 s - cycle of ex-OMEGA (that means suitable for faster moving vehicles, e.g. planes), length of one time slot is 400 ms, 200 ms spacing.

Stations:
Krasnodar: 45N/38E
Novosibirsk: 54N/83E
Komsomolsk-na-Amur: 50N/137E

Old scheme:

12.649 - KO / KR / ---- / ---- / ---- / NO
14.881 - NO / NO / ---- / ---- / KR / KO

The new system is different, a new frequency appears and even the locations may have been changed.

14.858 kHz (-43dB) 12.075 kHz (-43dB) together with a "ghost" on 14.858 kHz (-43dB) 12.102 kHz (-44dB) 11.929 kHz (-49dB) 12.705 (-49dB) and finally 11.292 kHz (-46dB) before the sequence start all over again. Antenna is a 1 meter loop with 32 turns positioned to receive in a east/west direction. Alpha transmissions with 6 transmitters was also received at my QTH on the 19.th of April at 22:11 local time. What are the Russians up to ? Anyone out there that have some updated info about ALPHA ?

Message: Art,

You can calculate your magnetic conjugate point using the following link

http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/space/cgm/cgm.html

I use http://www.intellicast.com/LocalWeather/World/SouthAmerica/Argentina/BuenosAires/SouthAmericaHIRES/

to watch for storms near my conjugate point. I have read that the storms need only be close, not necessarily at this point.

Best luck I have had with whistler activity has included storms near the conjugate point and magnetic storm activity. Not proof really, but encouraging.

Subject: Conjugate weather for whistlers?
Message: Some questions about the best times for listening to whistlers:

1. Have people had luck monitoring weather predictions for the conjugate points? If severe storms are predicted, then is there a better chance of hearing lightning-induced whistlers?

2. Where are these conjugate points? Is the conjugate point the opposite point on the earth from your location? Or is it a point equidistant from the equator in the opposite hemisphere? That is, from Denver, Colorado in the western U.S., would I monitor weather forecasts for the southern Indian Ocean or for the south Pacific west of South America?

Thanks! --Art

Dear INTMINS Participant,
The MIR Space Station is no longer on the predicted track for operations
this month. This is probably due to some maneuvering after the return of
the crew. The operations scheduled for April 22 have been cancelled.
We will continue to monitor the orbit projections and if they settle down,
we will replan for the next weekend (April 29-30). We will keep you posted
on developments and if a new schedule proves possible, we will publish it
via email.
Coordinated observations will be conducted on April 29-30 as scheduled.

The ALPHA tones appears and disappears during these days, with different sequence and frequency; yesterday the cycle was: 11.9 - 14.9 - 12.6 - 12.1 kHz.
Today is: 14.9 - 11.9 - 12.6 kHz, and all signals are with a same level.

About modulated statics: I recorded similar signals, in 200 Hz - 9 kHz band, with amplitude modulated statics on cycle of 40 Hz; but I don't know the phenomenon's origin. An interesting note: in the same spectrogram (of 3 sec.) there were many statics with different modulated cycle (20 Hz to 70 Hz).
Should it be an interesting argument to add in this web site?

Message: G'day Renato,
Have improved my VLF receiving setup with a preamplifier. Still using my CHA antenna.
Question: Have you noticed that on some lightning crashes there is a very distinct and definite periodic amplitude versus frequency characteristic? My guess for this effect is that it could be to do with the length of the lightning stroke selecting a fundamental and harmonics in the radiated signal. When I have time I will put some pictures up on my Web Page.

On another note I am working on a program which uses the periodic capture of Spectrogram screens to give a signal strength versus time display for selected frequencies. Will let you know if and when I get it working.
Regards Steve
